Ponor: ‘All Well’ After Minor Heart Procedure

2004 Olympic gold medalist Catalina Ponor (Romania) has resumed training following a minor procedure this week to correct a congenital heart defect.

Triple Olympic champion Catalina Ponor of Romania has resumed training following a minor procedure this week to correct a congenital heart defect.

“I had a congenital problem I was born with, but I went to the doctor and all is well,” Ponor told IG on Friday.

The procedure, performed under a local anesthetic, involved doctors inserting a catheter through a vein in the gymnast’s leg to examine her heart. The doctors then cauterized the abnormal area causing the arrhythmia, she said.

Ponor, 23, is making a comeback from competition following a 2007 retirement. She began training with the national team in April and is focused on October’s world championships. She won three gold medals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, but is still searching for her first world title.
